Revelation 1:11 (NKJV)
saying, “I am the Alpha and the
Omega, the First and the Last,” and,
“What you see, write in a book and
send it to the seven churches which
are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna,
to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis,
to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”
The Seven Churches were located on
a major Roman postal route and are
listed in the order in which a messenger
would reach the towns, making a
semicircular sweep from Ephesus.
The Loveless Church
1) “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He
who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of
the seven golden lampstands:
2) “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;
3)and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.
4) Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
5) Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
6) But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans , which I also hate.
7) “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” ’
Revelation 2:1-7, Ephesus:
An unloving orthodox church in the foremost city of proconsular Asia (See Acts 19& 20), and according to tradition, the residence
of John before and after his imprisonment on Patmos. The Ephesian church represents at the close of the first century.
The spiritual vitality springing from LOVE for the Lord had degenerated into orthodox routine.
I WILL COME TO YOU is present tense, referring not to the Second Coming but to a spiritual coming in blessing or in judgment. REMOVE YOUR LAMPSTAND: A congregation may continue to exist without being light in the darkness.
The name NICOLAITANS is symbolic, meaning "Conquering the Laity." Apparently this group claimed some kind of superior status that permitted idolatry and immorality (See Revelation 2:14-15).
OVERCOMES is military terminology, suggesting combat against the forces of the Evil One (See Ephesians 6:10-18). All believers are victors, but those who remain faithful in the midst of persecution and doctorial error give proof to their faith. This is the primary emphasis in Revelation. THE TREE OF LIFE, symbolizes spiritual sustenance to maintain eternal life. PARADISE is a Persian word for garden, which was used to designate the heavenly garden of God (Luke 23:43). The symbolism suggest the perfect fellowship that God and humankind enjoyed in Eden before the Fall and that they will again enjoy in the consummated Kingdom (See Revelation 21 & 22).

Keys to Wise Living
The wise believer takes the time to listen with his spiritual hearing to what the Spirit is saying to the church. This is as needed today as it was in the first century. One who hears and follows the voice of the Holy Spirit does not need to fear the deception that leads to apostasy. Rather, he will walk where Jesus requires and will grow in the things of the Spirit of God, which produce healthy, vibrant, Spirit-filled churches capable of preaching the Good News to all the world.
DEVELOP your spiritual ear. LISTEN to what the Sprit is saying to the church. When forced to choose, OBEY God, not people.

What Others Have to Say
on Revelation 2:1-7
for Revelation 2:1-7
Pastor Jack Hibbs
The church at Ephesus provides a classic illustration of leaders who failed to practice the Law of Priorities. Leaders can't merely stay busy; they must stay busy with the right activities. They don't just do things right; they do the right things.
The Ephesian leaders kept their people busy (Revelation 2:2-3) and the Lord commends them for their labor, but somehow they had left their first priority, which was to love God. their work for God had actually distracted them from God! They had busy hands, crowded calendars, full heads - but empty hearts.
What does God say about the remedy for their situation? In ne sentence it is this: Remember and repent, or I will return and remove your light (Revelation 2:5). This is good advice for any leader who has drifted from the top priorities:
The Maxwell Leadership Bible
Dear Woman of Destiny,
At age nine I accepted the Lord into my heart. Subsequent years have continually displayed the wonder of His love. They have also presented a challenge in learning how to respond to this amazing reality.
During the 1960's, my life was filled with the joys and opportunities of being a young wife and mother. As the daughter of a pastor, I knew the importance of seeking God's will for our lives and of being involved in Christian activity. My focus was filled with church, family, and work; but it was in the midst of "the good life" that I lost sight of God's higher vision - the vision of a deep and rich love relationship with Him!
It was not that church activity was the problem, nor other responsibilities. There are many wonderful things that come out of one's consistent commitment to church and family life. The issue was that I had allowed the good to become an enemy to what was best. Even good things can keep us from knowing the Lord as our first love.
When John the apostle wrote Revelation 2:4, it was to address this issue. The passage reveals that the church at Ephesus had become sidetracked in it priorities. The complaint brought by the Lord against the church was not for what they were doing, but for what they were failing to do! They had elevated the activity of kingdom work to a place of honor that belonged only to the King! he was calling them to return to their first love.
Failure to allow Jesus the highest place of honor in our lives will always displease the Father. It will always leave us with a compelling sense of loss, of incompleteness, a void, even agony of heart that yearns for "something more" while struggling to identify the real issues of inner conflict.
I have discovered we will not reach for more until we are dissatisfied with our current level of relationship. For me, the 1970's challenged the place where I was in spiritual experience. I began to immerse my life in prayer opportunities and the Word. Truth called for repentance. I was filled with a deep hunger and a firm resolve to break free from the grip of mediocrity that always chokes out the best things from God. I prayed earnestly that God would launch me out into the dep with Him - that He would swing me across that huge gulf called the "cares of life," a gulf that so easily separates us from essential steps to furthering our God - ordained destiny. The The decade became a season of new beginnings; my heart was being prepared for greater adventures with God.
This is the marvel of it all: Such adventures will always stretch you past yourself, past your fears and inability, past your struggles and bondages, while developing a clearer focus and a stronger faith. You will not only experience more of God's love, but you will be amazed at the exciting ways He arranges for you to share His love and minister in His name. Our vision of life is always limited; His vision is always greater.
Accept the challenge. Be passionate for Jesus. Embrace your first love! Only here will you discover grace perfectly fitted for your future. He is a phenomenal God!
From Women of Destiny Bible
How did you feel when you first began your relationship with God through Jesus Christ? You probably experienced a variety of feelings such as joy and peace and felt a new sense of freedom and a desire to love and to follow God with all your heart. God was probably your first love (see Revelation 2:4), but it can be easy to let other things in life - relationships, career, studies, even going to church - get in the way of passionately loving God. Spend some time in prayer inviting God to show you anything or anyone in your life that has become more important to you than He is. Ask His forgiveness and ask Him to help you make Him your first love once again.
Adapted from Revelation 2:4
Jesus, I pray that I will never leave or abandon You, my first love.
The Everyday Life Bible
Pastor Greg Laurie
This verse can be rendered , "You no longer love me as you did at first." These believers were so busy maintaining their separation from the world that they neglected their adoration of Christ. They had substituted perspiration for inspiration, work for worship. But labor is no substitute for love - think of two newlyweds, just back from their honeymoon. These early believers had forgotten their passion and devotion for Christ. Gone was their excitement and open display of love with no inhibitions. It is a serious thing to leave your first love, because love is the root of either success or failure.
Let's say that after you became a Christian, you slipped a bit. Somehow you lost some ground. How do you get back to being right with God? The Bible gives us three R's: REMEMBER. REPENT. REPEAT. First, you must REMEMBER: "Hey, there was a time when my commitment to Christ was stronger. I used to walk more closely with Him than I am today." Remembering is a point of reference. Second, you must REPENT. Change your current direction and stop doing what you are doing. Third, you must REPEAT. Go back to what you were doing before you slipped.

My case is rather like that of the Church of Ephesus; I have not been faithful to the talents committed to my trust and have lost my first love...
I do not, I will not, despair; for ever since my sad defection, when I was almost without hope, when I had forgotten God, yet I then found He had not forgotten me.

To send away
1) To let go, send away, remit, forgive. In this sense the word is used in connection with divorce, debt, and especially sins.
2) To permit, let.
3) To neglect, forsake, leave alone
From Revelation 2:5
Repentance is a decision that results in a change of mind, which in turn leads to a change of purpose and action.
From Revelation 2:5
Immediately, speedily, shortly, hastily. The word is especially used in the Book of Revelation in relation to the imminent return of Christ

If you are someone who has, at one time accepted Jesus into your life as Lord and Savior, but have gotten off track (lost your first love), be a Revelation 2:5 person and do as Jesus said, "Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works." If you do that, welcome back to God's Kingdom family; He never forgot you. As a matter of fact He was faithful, got your attention once again and called you back; that is why you are here. Please go contact box above and let me know you're starting over, I would like to pray over you, and if you want to start the Growing In Godliness Study and go over other next steps let me know that as well. Welcome Home!
When I read Revelation 2:1-7, As I read this portion of scripture it seems to me the people (who are the church), did not give God first place in their lives anymore. They let their work for God get in the way of keeping their personal relationship with Him. To me, they still loved God, that is why they kept up their work for Him, however, they did not continue to develop their own personal relationship with Him.
I am not here to judge; I have a few stories that I can tell on myself about (just keeping it real), how I let activities and people get in the way of my own personal relationship with God. Fortunately, His mercy and grace always put me back into the correct perspective.
The one I would like to write about at this time is how I let ministry get in the way, just as the church of Ephesus did.
I met this amazing prophetic woman of God, through a trusted friend, who was trying to get her ministry off the ground. We immediately clicked; next thing I knew I was one of her right-hand women. It was an amazing time in my life, we ministered at churches on a small and large level. I made myself available to her 24 hours a day…which is where the problem laid in. I had a family, job and other commitments and it was taking a toll on them.
I had let this woman and her ministry take over my life. Family and friends (especially the one who introduced me to her) tried to tell me that there was a problem, but I told myself they were jealous because I was happy with what I was finally doing in life.
Then my relationships, and my job went on the decline. My family was concerned but they were always there for me; however finances weren’t. Because finances weren’t I couldn’t support this woman and her ministry as I had been and because of that she disowned me. Just like that, all I poured into her, and her ministry was as if I never did anything. I was devastated and went into mourning, the loss was so great.
After being away from this woman and her ministry, God began to minister to me and heal me, as I am sure He was trying to beforehand, but I was so involved that I did not see it from Him or family and friends.
My point in sharing this with you is, God will always rescue you if your heart is in the right place. However, when you ignore the red flags, the warnings, the tougher the rescue will be. Remember to always check in where you are at; with God and the people God gave you (family and friends) to share life with.
