Olld Testament Covenant

Covenant

A covenant, compact, pledge, treaty, agreement. This is one of the most theologically important words in the Bible, appearing more than 250 times in the Old testament. A covenant may be made between individuals, between a king and his people or by God with His people. Here God's irrevocalble pledge is that He will be God to Abraham and his descendants forever. The greates provision of the Abrahmic covenant, this is the foundation stone of Israel's eternal relationship to God, a truth affirmed by David (2 Samuel 7:24), by the Lord Himself (Jeremiah 23:24-26), and by Paul (Romans 9:4, 11:2; 11:29). All other Bible promises are based on this one.

Genesis 17:1-8 (NKJV)

The Sign of the Covenant

1)  When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.

2) And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”

3) Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying:

4) “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.

5) No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.

6) I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.

7) And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.

8) Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”

New Testament Covenant

Covenant

A will, testament, pact , contract, agreed upon to which bothe parties subscribe. While both parties subscribe. While the word may signify an agreement between two parties, with each accepting mutual obligatins, most often it is a declaration of one persons will. In the Bible God initiated the whole action, set the conditions, and defined as a decree a declaration of purposes. God covenated with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Israel. In the New Testement Jesus ratified by His death on the cross a new covenant termed in Hebrews 7:22 "a better covenant."

Mark 14:22-24 (NKJV)

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

22)  And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

23)  Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24)  And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.

Hebrews 7:22 (NKJV)

22)  by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

THE WORDS WE SPEAK

Power and Promise of God's Word

One of the explicit teahings of the Bible is the importance of words we speak. In this text God changes Abram's name to Abraham and promises Abraham that he will be the father of may nations. "Abram" means "High Father" or "Patriarch." "Abraham means "Father of a Multiude." Thus, God was arranging that every time Abraham heard or spoke his own name, he would be reminded of God's promise. Adam Clark's Commentary states it well: "God (assoicates) the partiarach more nearly to Himself, by thus imparting to him a prtion of His own name," noting God added this to Abraham "for the sake of dignity."

The principle: Let God's words, which designated His will and promise for your life, become as fixed in your mind and as governing of your speech at God's changing Abraham's name was in shaping his concept of himself. Do not "name" yourself anything less thatn God does.

TRUTH IN ACTION

Cultivating Dynamic Devotion

In the New Testament, Jesus presents devotion as a matter of heart. He contrasts sincere, heart felt devotion with the eternal, hypocritical, pretentious practices of piety among teh Pharisees. He warns His disciples agianst allowing even genuine, good works to distract from wholehearted devotion to Him. Devotion is a matter of developing an intimate relationship with the living God, learning the warmth of a life that draws near to His Father-heart.

ACTION:

APPROACH devotion with faith, receiving the life and healing it provides.

In Context

1 Corinthians 11:23-28

Inatitution of the Lord's Supper

23) For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;

24) and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, [d]“Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

25) In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

26) For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Examine Yourself

27) Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

 28) But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

The Message of the Kingdom

The first call of the kingdom is to repentance. The implications of biblical repentance are threefold:

  1.  Renucitation and Reversal
  2. Submission and Teachability
  3. Continual Shapeability

There is no birth into the kingdom without hearing the call to salvation, renoucing one's sin, and turning from sin toward Christ the Savior (Acts 3:19).

There is no growth in the kingdom without obedience to Jesus' commandments and childlike reponsiveness as a disciple of Jesus, yielding to the teaching of God's Word (James 1:21-25).

There is no lifelong increase of fruit as a citzen of the kingdom without a willingness to accept the Holy Spirit's correction and guidance (Ephesians 4:30)

If you would like to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, say and mean the simple prayer below and you will be saved.

Lord Jesus,

I know that I am a sinner. I have broken Your commandments and fallen short of Your standards. Right now I turn from that sin and ask You to come into my life. Be my Lord, Savior, friend, and God. I put my faith in Jesus Christ, and in Him alone, to save me from my sins. Thank You for loving me and calling me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
